Slave Stealers

 Book Review:

Hey everyone. I gotta say, this is a hard book review to write. It's not that the book is badly written or that I didn't get immersed in it. I thought it was actually really good. The problem is the heaviness of the content - just a bit hard to handle. And I guess, how could it be anything else. So, let's get into it.

If you saw the film 'Sound of Freedom' that was such an unexpected hit at the box office last summer (see trailer below), this book contains the true life story that inspired the movie. Tim Ballard wrote Slave Stealers in an effort to raise awareness about the nauseating reality of modern day sex trafficking which enslaves more people today (many of whom are children) than American slavery ever did. And Tim Ballard doesn't just write about the problem - he fights it, hands-on. He is a real life operative who puts his life on the line to catch the criminals, and free the kids kidnapped into a life of sex exploitation.

Slave Stealers tells Tim's story while simultaneously chronicling the life of one of his heroes, Harriet Jacobs. Harriet was born into slavery in North Carolina during the year 1813. After much hardship she fled to freedom in the north, and then devoted her life to helping other slaves escape via the famous Underground Railroad. Ballard has looked to Harriet Jacobs as a source of strength and inspiration as he struggles in his own way to fight the same fight more than a century later. And Ballard urges you and I to join him in the fight. In his own words...

"Lets put down the weapons that we hold against each other and gather around this social plague. Let us all - of every color and creed - join hands and attack this wicked darkness together."

Recommendation: If you have a heart for the oppressed - if you want to help shine some light in a very dark corner of our world - if you have the courage to face the soul-sickness in an effort to be a part of the healing - then read this book. Read it and get involved. I dare you!!
