Comics and Sequential Art

 Book Review:

For a change, I am going to highlight a nonfiction title brand new to our library. Comics and Sequential Art is a masterwork by legendary cartoonist, Wil Eisner. In 1940 he created the syndicated cartoon The Spirit, which was extremely popular for over a decade. He is also recognized as the father of the graphic novel, being the one to pioneer it as a literary genre. In his memory, the Eisner Award is presented annually, honoring creators who have shown outstanding achievement in American comic art.

Comics and Sequential Art and its companion volume, Graphic Storytelling and Visual Narrative (which we also have in the stacks) are a distillation of his work as an instructor at the New York School of Visual Arts. The two volumes are commonly used as authoritative resources for students of cartooning today.

So, if learning how to make great cartoons and graphic novels sounds interesting to you, now you know where to start!

Recommendation: serious cartoonists couldn’t make a better choice.
