Comics and Sequential Art

Book Review: For a change, I am going to highlight a nonfiction title brand new to our library. Comics and Sequential Art is a masterwork by legendary cartoonist, Wil Eisner. In 1940 he created the syndicated cartoon The Spirit, which was extremely popular for over a decade. Comics and Sequential Art and its companion volume, Graphic Storytelling and Visual Narrative (which we also have in the stacks) are a distillation of his work as an instructor at the New York School of Visual Arts. The two volumes are commonly used as authoritative resources for students of cartooning today. So, if learning how to make great cartoons and graphic novels sounds interesting to you, now you know where to start! Recommendation: serious cartoonists couldn’...

Circumventing custom, she throws herself into the ocean as the first voluntary sacrifice. There at the bottom of the sea, she enters a spirit world where everything seems strange, and anything could happen. Personally, I found this retelling of an ancient Korean folk tale quite engaging. Part dreamland, part action/adventure, part romance – it has plenty to keep young readers turning its pages. In particular, I enjoyed getting acquaint...
