The Gammage Cup

Book Review:  Unlikely protagonist Muggles just doesn’t seem to fit into the rigid constraints of Minnipin society. Oh, she tries, but - well, somehow… And she isn’t the only one. When poet Gummy sees ominous fires on the mountains during his nighttime wanderings, and eccentric Walter the Earl warns of a coming invasion of ancient mythical enemies, their community only laughs and ridicules them. What can the little misfit band of outcasts do to save the society that has shunned them? Although new to our library collection, the Gammage Cup (1959) by Carrol Kendall has been personal favorite of mine since childhood. A disarmingly funny and charming fantasy story, it wrestles with deep themes like nonconformity, intolerance, hatred, and the courage to be true to yourself while embracing forgiveness for those who hurt you most. Anyone embroiled in today’s “cancel culture” movement would do well to read this book, and let its simple wisdom sink in. Recommendation: Fans of...

Kingdom of the Wicked

Book Review:                                                             "Buckle up friend!!!" I enjoyed every page of this book. I loved how intriguing every chapter was and how almost every chapter ended with a cliff hanger.  I loved the two main characters, Wrath and Emilia. My favorite part about these two were that they had hatred for each other, but also feelings towards each other. In the beginning I did cry. I’m very emotional when it comes to books. If you are too, buckle up friend!!! I absolutely 200% loved Wrath’s sarcasm. I thought it was the best part of this novel. I was very surprised on the plot twist as well. It was definitely an eye opener. This book definitely reminded me of Cruel Prince by Holly Black which is my favorite fantasy book. I’m excited to read the other books i...

Maybe Someday

Book Review: Honestly took me awhile to get into this book because I’ve been having a reading slump lately, but after a few days I really got into it. Ok, first off I love Sydney - she has my whole heart. She’s so independent, beautiful, smart etc. Her and Ridge are so cute together. But seriously, some moments made me doubt Ridge so hard like when she asked, “if she texted you she was wrong, would you leave out my front door without a second thought?” He said, yes because my loyalty is still with her. LIKE OMG. I literally hated Maggie though. Even if she’s sick she shouldn’t have done that to either of them, putting them in that situation. She was right to let him go. The way they communicated through text because he’s deaf, and when she was mad, she kept throwing her phone but he would always pick it up. I thought Brigette and Warren were hilarious in this book. They made me smile every time, especially when Warren told her Sydney was deaf, and she would yell at Sy...

Harlem Shuffle

Book Review:  “Ray was only slightly bent when it came to being crooked…” In “Harlem Shuffle”, Pulitzer Prize winning author Colson Whitehead takes us on a gritty excursion through one of America’s most iconic neighborhoods during the social unrest of the 1960’s. Ray Carney is a black furniture store owner struggling to raise himself and his young family out of the poverty and crime of the slums. Not an easy task when surrounded by vicious gangs, unscrupulous law enforcement, junkies and prostitutes, heists, riots, and a ne’er-do-well cousin who keeps dropping trouble on his doorstep. Sound grim? Actually, the book is surprisingly upbeat and fun. Colorful characters abound, and there is a good-humored exuberance that permeates even the darkest scenes. Considering racism and corruption are predominant themes, this is an unexpected pleasure for the reader. If you’ve read the book, let me know what you think of it in the comments section. Recommendation: A definite must read fo...
