  Book Review:   Into sci-fi? If you want to talk about the genre and not sound like a complete idiot, you’ve got to know something about Isaac Asimov. He is considered one of the 20 th centuries greatest science fiction authors, along with Authur C. Clarke (2001: a Space Odyssey) and Robert A. Heinlein (Dune). Of all Asimov’s works of fiction (he was also a renowned nonfiction science writer), the most famous is the Foundation Series which ranks third highest for all-time sales (20+ million copies) in the genre. Spots one and two go to Heinlein’s Dune and Orwell’s 1984 respectively. Asimov released Foundation in 1942 as the first book in a three-volume series. Later the series was expanded to include seven titles in all. In the words of Jack McDevitt (The Engines of God), “If anything can be said to have been the launchpad for space age science fiction, it has to be the Foundation trilogy. It’s a classic. Casablanca: greatest romance movie of all time

  Movie Review:   Just to change things up a bit, this month I’ll review one of the latest additions to our library’ s DVD collection – Casablanca. This Warner Brothers black and white classic starring Humphry Bogart and Ingrid Bergman was released in 1942, winning three Academy Awards (best director, best screenplay, and outstanding motion picture). In 2006 the American Writer’s Guild proclaimed it the greatest screenplay of the last 100 years, and the American Film Institute ranks it as the best romantic film of all time. Casablanca receives an astonishing 98% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes (a percentage it shares with another heavy-weight classic romance, It Happened One Night starring Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert which is ranked 2 nd greatest romantic movie of all time), This romantic drama set in WWII centers on gambling den owner and American expatriate Rick, and a ravishing old-flame Ilsa, who re-enters his life complete with a new husband, Victor.
